Password Protected Directories
Discover how to set up a protected and user-only area in your web site with password-protected directories.
A password-protected directory or area is a folder that can be accessed only if a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized people could observe its content. This function could be used for the main folder of a certain website or exclusively for a specific subfolder depending on the needs you have. For instance, when you are developing a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it before it's 100% ready, you should prohibit the access to it completely, while if you would like only some people to be able to access particular files, you are able to password-protect only a particular folder, while the rest of the site could be seen by anyone. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear in case the login details the visitor types in aren't right. Even a direct link to a file will not work if any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Shared Website Hosting
Creating a password-protected area will take only a couple of clicks and a few seconds if you host your sites within a
shared website hosting account with our company. You'll not have to do anything complicated - you will need to choose a domain/subdomain, to pick which folder under it has to be protected, and then to enter the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. If a number of people require their own login credentials, there will not be a problem to create a number of different usernames with access to the same folder. All protected folders shall appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this feature is enabled. If you want to turn off the security feature for any folder, you can deactivate it from the very same section of the CP in which you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you have a
semi-dedicated server account with our company, you shall be able to shield any content you have uploaded via our protection tool. Its interface is as basic and intuitive as that of the Hepsia CP it's a part of, so you will not have to input any code at any time. You will only need to pick one of the domains/subdomains you have inside the website hosting account and to determine which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. Then you can input the username and the password, that will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you shall be ready. The protection shall be switched on at once, so anybody who tries to access the freshly protected folder will have to enter the accurate login information. When a number of people should be able to open the same content, you could make a separate username for each.
